William Haveruk

February 5, 2009

William Haveruk passed away at the age of 85 on Thursday February 5, 2009 at 03:55 from a heart attack brought on due to complications of his battle with cancer. Bill and his wife Patricia moved to Sidney twelve years ago fell in love with the magnificent surroundings, friendly caring neighbors, and settled in the Lands End area. A retired veteran, Bill served in the Merchant Navy. His entrepreneurial spirit afforded Bill many opportunities throughout his life with most spent in the field of sales. An avid angler he often took to the ocean with friends or alone to search for the elusive salmon – the principal – that got away many years back. He loved spending time on his back deck basking in the sun jokingly telling stories of all types – from his days growing up on a farm in northern Alberta during the great depression with his 10 brothers and sisters. In days gone by, he would hunt moose to supplement food for his family of four sons. Bill was a true outdoorsman and lived his years outdoors whenever possible. His cancer was diagnosed in the spring of 2008. He fought a strong battle departing with courage and strength to the bitter end. We know he is out of pain and is among past family members, loved ones, friends and his dogs Bruno and Teddy bear. He was a loving man, rough around the edges, with a generous heart striking up conversations with strangers as easily as he did with friends. His family already dearly misses Bill, as do many of his friends. Dad, you were a hard one to love, but loved you were and still are. May your spirit live on in harmony, bringing joy to your new friends.

Dad’s wishes have been granted with no formal service to celebrate his wonderful life. His ashes will be spread on mother earth in a place dear to his heart. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the cancer society in William Haveruk’s honor and memory so that one day others may be spared this disease.
