April 29, 1947 - December 17, 2023
In Loving Memory ~
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Don Cayo, at home in North Saanich on December 17, 2023. Born on April 29, 1947, he was the son of Lloyd and Imilda (Frappier) Cayo, loving husband to Betsy, Dear Old Dad to Vickie of Quispamsis, N.B. and David (Jill Wallace) of North Saanich.
His loss is also deeply felt by his sisters, Maureen (Robert) McKenzie of Edmonton, Lorinda Cayo (Paul Godin) of Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, and his eight grandchildren - Ian, Tara, Patrick and Charlotte Sooley of Quispamsis, N.B. and Lily, Silas, Lucy and Westley Cayo of North Saanich, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Don's career as a journalist and journalism instructor took him around the globe. His life was enriched by the experiences he had and people he met all around the world, as well as those close to home.
He began his journalism career in the late 1960s, and while working at the Western Star in Corner Brook, NFLD, he met Betsy and married her in September 1970. He later became a reporter for the Canadian Press in Saint John, N.B., until a move to Charlottetown in the early 1980s, where he taught the Journalism program at Holland College. 1986 saw him return to Saint John, where he held various writing and editing positions at the Telegraph Journal, until he moved on to the Vancouver Sun in 2000.
Following his retirement from the Sun, he moved to Vancouver Island in 2017, where he enjoyed being near his son and 4 of his grandchildren, and he had plenty of time to take long walks and lots of pictures - he especially loved to photograph birds, and capture moments with his grandkids on their many 'adventures'.
Altogether, Don left footprints in 72 countries on 5 continents, and his mark on countless lives. He will be dearly and sadly missed. A small, private scattering of ashes is planned for family at a later date.
