Rock festival honours classic rock

Laketown Rock Festival welcomes mix of modern and classic rock heavy hitters to Lake Cowichan this May Long weekend.
The Laketown Rock Festival brings Sam Roberts Band, Trooper, Honeymoon Suite, Glass Tiger and Loverboy to the Laketown Ranch in Lake Cowichan this May Long weekend.

This May Long weekend, music fans will take over the 172-acres Laketown Ranch in Lake Cowichan for the inaugural Laketown Rock Festival.

Canadian rock icon Sam Roberts Band will headline Friday night's Main Stage, with Trooper and Honeymoon Suite closing Saturday's show. The festival wraps up on Sunday night with Honeymoon Suite and Glass Tiger taking the stage.

The site is going well, because of the weather we’ve been having, the grounds are looking amazing,” said Mike Hann, Festival and Events Manager.

Friday night's lineup skews more towards modern rock acts with Roberts closing the night after local favourites Band of Rascals play the Main Stage at 6:15 p.m.

We wanted to present the best product we could,” Hann said. “We looked at the market and ... it was the classic rock vide that was really missing (from the summer festival scene).”

Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees Loverboy rose to the top of the US and Canadian charts with their 1981 release Get Lucky — which included singles “Workin' for the Weekend” and “When it's Over” which earned them six Juno awards, a record that still stands today.

Glass Tiger — best known for their hit “Don't forget me when I'm gone” earned them a Number 1 single in 1986. Honeymoon Suite and Trooper both dominated the Canadian and US charts throughout the 1970 and 80s.

The weekend lineup also features can't miss local talent: Malahat, Stinging Belle and High Noon To Midnight all sharing the Main Stage with some of classic rock's biggest names.

Tickets can be purchased at Canadian Tire in Duncan and Lyle's Place in Victoria. For more information visit
