U-JAM’s Summer Jazz Workshop will be held August 15 to 19 at the Victoria Citadel in Saanich. The camp is designed to help students of all ages and skill levels gain instrumental/vocal experience in an environment of encouragement and fun. Students of all instruments can apply, particularly saxophone, flute, clarinet, trombone, trumpet, piano, strings, guitar, bass (electric and/or acoustic) and drums, as well as vocalists.

The goal of the camp is to give students the opportunity to make music together in small and large ensembles and improve their musical skills, including improvising and jamming.

Taking place in the beautiful setting of the Victoria Citadel, the week offers a memorable experience of musicianship and camaraderie. Classes are also offered in theory, arranging, songwriting, chording, vocalizing, historical perspectives, technology, and many special areas of interest. Group programs for piano and guitar are offered, plus masterclasses, performances, jam sessions and more.

Play or sing in a band, meet other musicians, make music, and generally have fun—the evening concert series includes a nightly jam session with the pros!

Core faculty include Joe Hatherill (reeds), Gergana Vellinova (voice), John Lee (guitar), Damian Graham (drums), Joey Smith (bass), Dave Flello (brass) and Ashley Wey (piano). Wey and Louis Rudner are the artistic directors.

U-JAM is a registered not-for-profit society to support and encourage live music performances and education in jazz, rock, blues and other improvised musical styles, particularly for young people.

The workshop cost is $399 for the week. Billeting and hotel information is available on request. Bursaries and scholarships are also available for deserving students.
