There’s a group of B.C. painters who, when left to their own devices, create art using a variety of media, styles and muses.
For their shows together as members of the Canadian Whisky Painters, however, the nearly two dozen artists create pieces using a more stringent set of criteria. The most significant of those are the use of either watercolour or gouache paints, and the fact none of the works are larger than four-by-six inches.
From Feb. 12-23 the Coast Collective Gallery and Art Centre in Colwood is hosting the Canadian Whisky Painters 2020 Exhibition, with a meet-the-artists reception planned for Saturday, Feb. 15 from 1-4 p.m. at the gallery.
The Whisky Painters come from a variety of backgrounds and specialties, from plein air painters and urban sketchers to studio painters. Their works for this show have been “done to the best of our ability, using artist quality paints on acid free paper. These little gems may be painted ‘en plein air’, at street side, in a field, or coffee shop, pub, and even in studio.”
No matter where these small works are painted, they add, you can bet “there’s a good shot of Canadian whisky in each painting!”
From shape-shifters to climate change
Later in the month, Coast Collective hosts Head in the Clouds, an open call exhibition that asked for works depicting everything from faces, “shape-shifters,” climate change, cloud metaphors and artistic flights of fancy, as well as literal clouds and skyscapes. Visitors may find either 2D or 3D artwork as part of the exhibition.
The show runs from Feb. 26 to March 8, with a chance to meet the artists on Saturday, Feb. 29 from 1-3 p.m.
