Monik Nordine is hoping the end of June finds jazz enthusiasts and music lovers in general wandering the streets of Victoria finding new styles and places to hear live entertainment.
This award-winning jazz saxophonist and arranger and fellow Victoria jazz musician Jon Miller have organized the Left Coast Jazz Festival, a collection of afternoon shows June 27-30 featuring local performers playing at the Copper Owl, above Paul’s Motor Inn, 1900 Douglas St.
This festival is happening to complement the TD Victoria International JazzFest happening at the same time, Nordine says.
“Jon and I both lived in Montreal for a while and during JazzFest, every place in town lit up with the sounds of jazz,” she says. “It was like ‘let’s get some jazz going, let’s make it a party.’ Getting more locals involved is going to make it even more fun.”
Shows begin with jazz fusion quartet The New Cool playing from 4 to 6 p.m. June 27, followed on the Friday by the Monik Nordine Trio in the same time frame. On Saturday afternoon the Jon Miller Quartet hits the Copper Owl stage and on Sunday, Nanaimo guitarist Astrid Lyre hosts a jam from 2-5 p.m.
Tickets for all of the shows are available at eventbrite.ca or at the door, if available. The festival is also supporting performances at the nearby Northern Quarter at 1724 Douglas St., and Vinyl Envy record store at 1717 Quadra St.
