Members of critically acclaimed Australian band Boy & Bear will be doing a lot more than Suck On Light when they appear next Tuesday (Oct. 1) at the Capital Ballroom in support of their album of the same name, which releases this Friday.
This rock-folk quintet reached the heights in 2011 when their album Moonfire, won Album of the Year and they were named Breakthrough Artists of the Year and Best Group at the Australian Recording Industry Association awards. Both it and their follow-up release, Harlequin Dream (2013), reached the top 10 in that country. Suck On Light is the band’s first record since 2015’s Limit of Love, which spent a week in ARIA’s number 1 spot.
Singer-songwriter Stu Larsen will open for the band in Victoria.
The creation of Suck On Light came amid a personal and professional crisis for the band, which saw vocalist-guitarist Dave Hosking battle debilitating illness. The new record, in pre-release listens, is said by some to be their finest yet, one that takes the trademark analogue warmth of their sound and pushes it to places the Sydney group has never explored.
The title track and “Hold Your Nerve” are the first singles released off the new album. Others they’ve enjoyed success with include “Southern Sun,” which spent weeks in the Top 5 on the Triple A Top 30 Chart; “Walk the Wire” and “Feeding Line.”
