If you’re looking to get your hands dirty this spring an event this weekend will help you get a head start.
Seedy Saturday, a horticulture event coming to the Victoria Conference Centre on Feb. 16, is aiming to educate new and experienced gardeners while promoting urban gardening and sustainability.
Some topics included in the 16 presentations at the event will be on how to grow your own hops, using less water in your garden and creating a butterfly garden.
“We’ve asked some of our speakers to tailor their presentations to people living in an urban setting,” said Heather Leary, organizer of the event. “There are many creative ways people can garden in a variety of spaces even if they’re way up on the 20th floor of a condo.”
According to Leary, urban gardening has been gaining momentum with younger crowds even if they only have small spaces to work with.
“There’s something magic about [using your own hands] … and I think it’s that whole sort of connection to nature that’s drawing people in,” she said.
Along with presentations, the event will host nearly 60 vendors and exhibitors offering seeds, plants, gardening tools and local food products. There’s also the popular seed exchange, and members of the Victoria Master Gardeners Association will be on hand to answer any gardening related questions you have.
“When you get people who are passionate about something altogether, I think that energy is really inspiring so I’m looking forward to seeing that come together,” Leary said.
