Matter of Beer: Whistlemania slams us into summer festival season

From pro wrestling at Whistlemania June 24, to the return of the Langford Beer Festival in July, this summer has it all

After dribs and drabs of heat and sun, it looks like our late spring has turned into early summer, so it’s time for outdoor events, patios, and celebrations. Beer festivals have always been known for their food options and musical additions, but there’s one event that brings in something you don’t see anywhere else: Professional Wrestling.

That’s right, Whistle Buoy brought us Whistlemania last year and turned Market Square into Market Squared-Circle, and it’s back again to celebrate their birthday with beer, music, and some high-flying entertainment. Showcasing the talents of 365 Pro Wrestling, guests will see some energetic, body-slamming fun, while enjoying the beverage garden and always delicious food from Dumpling Drop, Los Panas Kitchen, Wandering Mollusk, and The Missing Link.

That might already sound like a lot, but with seven hours of fun, it’s not even half of it. There will also be drag performances by host Vivian Vanderpuss, and live music from The Velveteins, The Dougs, Peach Pyramid, and DJ Juice. So grab your tickets from Eventbrite for $60 and join them on June 24, from 3 - 10 PM.

Another festival returning this year is the Langford Beer Festival, put on July 15 by the people at the Victoria Beer Society. As someone who attended the event last year, it’s understandable if guests are a little apprehensive after some of the issues that came up last year, but it seems they’ve addressed them head-on. The event will now be taking place on the 80,000 square foot field instead of the courtyard, and will also have multiple entrance points and more vendors to make sure everyone has a good time. Last year’s event had a lot of potential and with the problems ironed out, it should be a great addition to everyone’s summer plans.

Tickets for July 15 are available at VictoriaBeerSociety.com, with general admission and premium tickets available for $45 and $75 respectively.

Finally, from the construction dust and noise, a local brewery is reemerging once again. Swift Brewing, the new iteration of what was once Canoe, has recently launched and taken over the lower corner space as their taproom at the always fantastic Craft Beer Market down on the water. With a retro feel and a variety of beers that should satisfy anyone’s tastes, it’s a great addition to the waterfront and fills in the gap in those always wonderful brewery crawls.
