Nanaimo author and comedic storyteller Judy Millar says the inside-out umbrella she struggles with on the cover of her new book sums up life.
Millar will be sharing some laughter at her book launch presentation on Feb. 24 in the Forum of the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre, according to a news release.
Other Than That, I’m Fine: Essays on Life and Other Inconveniences is a collection of humorous essays, poems and some personal stories that have delighted audiences across Vancouver Island.
"I like looking at life through a comic lens,” she said in the release. “There are tales of my time as a chicken-plucker and a klutzy kisser, plus pieces about pet peeves like getting stuck on hold in phone line limbo.”
In the book, Millar even pokes fun at historical characters, pondering how Shakespeare’s wife really felt and what Henry VIII might have posted on eHarmony.
Whether she meets people on the page or by presenting her stories on stage, Millar aims to share the gift of laughter.
“Humour helps us handle the stresses of life,” she said. “Moments of humour are a reprieve. We come back refreshed, better able to cope.”
Like an inside-out umbrella, life will sometimes go sideways, and Millar said we might as well laugh about it.
The book launch is a free event and starts at 2 p.m.
Books will be available for author signing and for purchase ($20) by cash, cheque or e-transfer.
