With the very first notes of "Ohmigod You Guys", the cast of Legally Blonde: The Musical burst onto the stage in a flurry of infectious energy and full-throttle commitment. This high-energy opening set the tone for Cowichan Musical Society’s production, a show bursting with pink sparkles and all-out fun.
Dynamic group numbers are vital to this show and the ensemble delivered. The choreography blended classic musical theatre with the high-energy feel of an early 2000s music video and was a highlight.
The show was lighthearted and funny and packed with great comedic moments. There were also some jaw-dropping ones. One of those standout moments came from Charlotte Heath as Brooke Wyndham. Heath not only delivered a powerhouse vocal performance but did so while dancing and jumping rope at full intensity. "Whipped Into Shape" was among the show’s most physically demanding numbers and Heath executed it seamlessly.
The Greek chorus of Elle’s sorority sisters acted as Elle’s inner cheer squad, confidantes and back-up dancers and brought relentless energy and humour.
The script itself, while fun, felt like a bit of a time capsule. Legally Blonde debuted in the early 2000s and while it was still a celebration of underestimated women proving their brilliance, some of its takes on gender, sexuality, and body image felt outdated.
James Meyer is a young performer to watch. As Emmett Forrest he brought a grounded, heartfelt presence to the character. His voice was clear and strong, and he embodied the character with a sincerity that grounded the show’s playful energy.
Of course, this show belongs to the lead character of Elle Woods. At the centre of all the eye candy, Alyssa Bryce brought Elle to life with warmth, charm and stamina for days. She had a killer voice, great comedic timing and, like Elle herself, felt like she could be your BFF.
Director Stephanie Roth did a fantastic job guiding this large cast and bringing out the best in them. This production proved she can handle ambitious directorial projects with flair.
Legally Blonde: The Musical was a delightful, pink-fueled joyride, carried by a cast that radiated talent and enthusiasm. Like Elle Woods herself, the show knew exactly what it was and leaned into the fun to deliver entertainment that sparkled.
