In Loving Memory ~
Diana Rosemary Gough (née Hughes) passed away peacefully at Sidney All Care Residence on April 15 at the age of 81. She is survived by her daughters Kirstie (Tino) and Beccy (Scott); grandchildren Gabrielle, Sam, Alba and Silvia; siblings Bron, Jenny and Pen; and extended family in England.
Born in Derby, England in 1940, Diana emigrated to Canada in 1965 with husband, Terry. She worked for many years as a primary school teacher in Ontario, where she was much loved by her students for her unconventional approach to education. She received various awards for her work as a teacher and in recognition of the dance club she founded, inspiring over 200 girls and boys to express themselves to music at Blair Road Public School in Cambridge, Ontario.
Diana loved dance and practiced eclectic styles from tap to flamenco and belly-dance. Where music was heard she would be up and dancing and continued to tap her toe to the beat till the end.
On the family farm in Ontario she was proud of a productive garden and kept a varied menagerie including 7 horses. Diana rode as a child and rediscovered this passion in her 30s. She was a licensed sailing pilot and sailed Georgian Bay in Ontario and the waters around Vancouver Island up to Desolation Sound.
Diana moved to BC in 1989 and finally settled in Sidney in 2010. She lived alone, happy and independent in her yellow cottage on Fifth Street, within easy reach of the many activities she participated in, on board her scooter, with its Welsh flag flying.
She will be remembered in Sidney for her active role in defense of the skate board park and for greeting everyone she encountered with a “Hello, Love!”
Her sense of humor, rebellious spirit, and open smile won the friendship of many. She was a loving mother and an exceptional person, with an extraordinary will to live. She will be sorely missed.
