Sloan, Alice Elizabeth Jane ( nee: Stevenson) passed away quietly at 1 am, Jan 01, 2009 at Moog and Friends Hospice House in Penticton, BC. Born to Jennie and Hazen Stevenson in Nelson BC on July 8, 1923.

Jane is survived by her son David Stevens (Wendy) of Nelson BC, her daughter Marcia Stacy (Ron) of Summerland BC, her brother Henry Stevenson (Audrey) of Nelson BC. and grandchildren Kathleen Bayoff of Armstong BC and William Stevens of Nelson BC., as well as a niece and 3 nephews, 3 great grandchildren.

Jane’s career began in Nelson (as Alice Stevenson) where she had a studio in the late 40’s. She was a pioneering photojournalist who worked on many news items including the “Sons of Freedom” uprising in the Kootenays. Her work was published in Time, Life, Sun, Province, and many other newspapers around the world. She also shot documentary film for CBC TV.

Later, Jane and her husband Jim had portrait studios in Penticton and Sidney where she took beautiful pictures of children, weddings, families, school classes, dignitaries, as well as candid news shots. She was a talented photo retoucher, restoration and hand colouring specialist.

Jane was a fluent speaker of “Esperanto” (the international language) and helped bring Esperanto Conferences to Sidney. Her love of dogs had her pet sitting and working with the Pacific Animal Therapy Society, bringing “Emmy” the blue heeler to visit the elderly. She sang in the Anglican Church choir, and with the Peninsula Singers. She was a very active member of the Shutterbugs photography club, the Community Arts Council, Peninsula Players, and holds many awards for photography, including a Ruby Lifetime Recognition Award with the Professional Photographers of BC.

Jane moved with Marcia and Ron to Summerland in early 2008, closer to their family in Penticton, Kelowna, and Nelson. She missed her friends in Sidney so much that she went back in July and stayed until November 2008. Sadly, she fell ill with Melanoma (reccurance) and lost the battle in four short weeks.
