On April 21st Victoria Baroque closes its 12th season with two of the Chandos Anthems by Handel.
“Unlike his much-loved Messiah and other Oratorios, the Chandos Anthems are relatively rarely performed, yet ingenious, imaginative, and uplifting,” the organization said in a press release.
Handel wrote eleven anthems while working for the duke of Chandos at the Cannons Estate in Middlesex in 1717-18.
The two anthems to be performed on April 21st are ‘O Praise the Lord with one consent’, and “Let God arise” as well as Henry Purcell’s “jubilant” anthem, ‘Rejoice in the Lord alway’.
The size of the ensemble for this concert is similar to the one Handel would have used at the Cannons estate, with an octet of professional singers and nine instrumentalists including oboe, bassoon, strings, and chamber organ.
