Governor General award-winning playwright Hannah Moscovitch questions redemption, love, guilt and the sins of the father in East of Berlin, which plays Theatre Inconnu, May 4 to 21.
Moscovitch is one of Canada’s most celebrated and produced playwrights and this play is one of her most emotionally gripping works.
As young Rudi uncovers the mystery of his father’s past, his own present and future are forever altered.
Sarah, the young daughter of a Holocaust victim enters the life of Rudi and the growing closeness between them is challenged as Rudi learns more about the part his father played in Sarah’s tragedy.
According to the Toronto Star: “Moscovitch’s examination of the relationship between the children of victims of the Holocaust and the children of those who victimized them is astonishingly complex, as well as sexy, funny and suspenseful. There are no easy answers in this script … But those looking for theatre that stretches your heart and your brain will be well rewarded.”
The play, starring Melissa Blank, MJ Connelly and James Johnson, is directed by Don Keith
