After closing its doors to live audiences on March 13, 2020, the Farquhar at UVic suspended its annual presenting series—

but live is back!

“We’re excited to announce that the Farquhar will be presenting two shows in the first part of 2022: International Guitar Night and Kalabante: Afrique en Cirque,” says Farquhar director Ian Case. “Our last in-person presentation was International Guitar Night in January of 2020, so it’s fitting that we’d welcome this as our first presentation in 2022. We’re pleased to once again be offering the best in culture, creativity and community—all while ensuring the safety of audiences and artists. We’ll be following strict protocols to ensure that everyone coming to the Farquhar is as safe as possible and can still enjoy great evening out.”

International Guitar Night takes place January 26 at 7:30 pm, featuring Stephanie Jones (Australia), Alexandr Misko (Russia), Eleonora Strino (Italy) and guest host Lulo Reinhardt (Germany).

They’ll bring their guitars, their talents and a good time for all as they tour across the US and Canada. Audiences can expect to enjoy classical guitar, modern fingerstyle, jazz, Latin swing and gypsy jazz stylings, paired with some contemporary hits to hum along to.

Rescheduled from 2020, the Farquhar’s second presentation is Kalabante: Afrique en Cirque, set for February 26. A long-time favourite with audiences, Kalabante combines theatre, dance, music and utterly astonishing physical acrobatics.

Kalabante: Afrique en Cirque is a high-flying, audaciously athletic feast for the senses. Yamoussa Bangoura’s 12-piece Montréal-based troupe fuses long-established African arts and European circus traditions to showcase exceptional dancers, contortionists, gymnasts and equilibrists, as well as a group of highly skilled musicians.

Their name means “the Young Rogues” and these high-energy performers will blow you away with near superhuman acts of agility and strength, all set to the rhythm of the tropics. Kalabante promises to be a visually stunning show with artists who are committed to their craft. This event is appropriate for all ages.
