Each January, Dance Victoria hosts Dance Days, a free, 10-day community celebration of dance with free classes, workshops and studio showings at local dance studios. Dance Victoria also hosts Rough Cuts, performances of works in progress by some of the West Coast’s hottest choreographers.

As a longstanding community collaboration for the past 13 years, Dance Days engages the community in diverse and accessible dance forms while promoting dance appreciation.

On January 13, Out Innerspace Dance Theatre kicks off Dance Days with a performance of Bygones at the McPherson Playhouse. Bygones is a gem of dance theatre with full production value: compelling choreography, inventive lighting and imaginative props that create magical illusions. (See separate story, page 11.)

On January 22, at Rough Cuts, experience a selection of works in progress by Dance Victoria resident artists Luciana Freire D’Anunciação, Kelly McInnes, Visible Bodies Collective, and Kemi Craig, followed by informal discussions. These artists’ works explore animality and interdependence with living things; Indigenous stories of injustice and healing past, present and future; and the connection between spectatorship and performativity.

Rough Cuts takes place at Dance Victoria Studios (2750 Quadra Street) on January 22 from 2 to 6 pm. Entrance is free, with a suggested donation of $10. Due to limited capacity, patrons are asked to visit dancevictoria.com in early January and RSVP for each show.

Finally, throughout Dance Days (Jan 13–22), local studios are offering an array of free adult dance classes in all kinds of styles.

Have you ever wanted to try modern dance, ballet, flamenco, ballroom, or dance roller skating? Well, get out your dancing shoes, because now is your chance. Look for the online calendar at dancevictoria.com in early January.
