BC Ferries cancelled due to weather Friday afternoon

BC Ferry Service routes between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island have been cancelled until further notice.

Due to adverse weather in the Straight of Georgia, BC Ferry Service routes between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island have been cancelled until further notice.

This effects the following routes as of 3 p.m.:

  • Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Victoria (Swartz Bay)
  • Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Nanaimo (Duke Point)
  • Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Southern Gulf Islands
  • West Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) – Nanaimo (Departure Bay)

BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall said winds are currently reaching more than 40 knots, with gusts up to 55 knots.

Depending on the forecast and duration of the storm, Marshall said it’s unlikely that services will resume for the rest of the day.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for Howe Sound, saying gusts will roll in late Thursday night and could toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Special weather statements have also been put out for most of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland as a windstorm moves through the region.

Environment Canada says gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour are expected on Friday as a strong low pressure system passes to the west of Vancouver Island.

West Vancouver Island, Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands are expected to be buffeted by the winds Friday morning, while the storm is forecast to move through the South Coast in the afternoon.

The agency says the wind is expected to last through Friday evening.
