The Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show is celebrating 54 years and it’s better than ever in 2024 with 140 pieces on display, promise organizers.
“It’s amazing to realize that this show has grown and developed over the past 54 years,” said past president and show coordinator Janet Magdanz. “The comment that I hear is that it just keeps getting better and better each year. The gallery that we now have lends itself to a top-quality art show. We have also developed an online show which can bring the show to people all over the world, with the opportunity to purchase the art. It is so exciting to continually develop and change as society and the world develops and changes.”
The exhibit opens on May 9 from 7 to 9 p.m., at the CVAC Galleries inside the Cowichan Community Centre and will feature mock-tails, a chance to speak with artists, and music from the John Robertson Trio.
Also on opening night, CVAC will be presenting awards in the categories of ‘Best in Show’, ‘Awards of Excellence’, and the Juror’s Awards. Visitors can also vote on their favourite artwork for the People’s Choice award which will be announced on June 6.
This largest non-juried show on the island will run until June 4. Guests will see works in all mediums including paintings sculptures, wood, metal, fabric, jewelry, and more.
Art lovers will be able to get in on artist demonstrations and tours plus Art-Tea on May 11 — an opportunity to share tea and treats in an intimate, setting surrounding by beautiful works of art — a perfect way to spend an early Mother’s Day.
Art Attack will take place on May 25 where artists ‘battle’ — painting to music while guests peruse their works, and every 20 minutes, guests vote for their favourite piece. Winners then go head to head for the top prize.

“Artists of all skill levels submit works they wish to share with the community,” said Magdanz. “Gallery visitors get a deep sense of the enormous talents in our region. All the works are for sale, so guests can purchase a truly unique piece that resonates with them. We hope everyone will take away an appreciation for beautiful works, but also for the meaning and perspectives the artists express.”
