Spark to Flame 2022 is a student concert experience that enriches lives and ignites the spirits of both musicians and audience members; it is one of the most important performances of the year at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM).

This year, the concert will be performed in front of a live, limited-capacity audience at Alix Goolden Performance Hall on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 7:30 pm.

The Spark to Flame program supports young, emerging artists’ development and is open to all students of the VCM. Selected through audition, students are given the opportunity to work with VCM faculty in the weeks leading up to the performance to develop their professional and artistic skills.

The final concert is described as a magical evening featuring these highly talented young soloists accompanied by the VCM Chamber Orchestra.

“Spark to Flame offers our student musicians the opportunity to perform in the limelight as solo artists, while showcasing the incredible music education offered at the VCM,” said Victoria Conservatory of Music CEO Jane Butler McGregor.

The VCM Chamber Orchestra for this year’s concert will be comprised of VCM students playing alongside VCM faculty and other professional musicians. It will be conducted by esteemed Maestro Timothy Vernon, artistic director of Pacific Opera Victoria and conductor laureate of Orchestra London. In the early stages of his career, Vernon studied conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller at the Victoria School (now Conservatory) of Music and was the VCM’s first graduate student in 1964.

The VCM congratulates this year’s featured soloists, who through audition have earned the opportunity to take the stage as part of this exciting concert: Eu-Rway Chew (piano), Amy Chen (piano), Alex Chernata (clarinet), Chloe Williams (flute), Tasmin Carlow-Ujiie (cello), Elana Lin (violin) and Max Francis (violin)
