Victoria’s Carmanah bumps Arkells out of top spot with latest release

“Nightmare” the second song from new album to hit No. 1 on CBC Music Top 20 list

Victoria indie band Carmanah scored a coup today, when their song “Nightmare” captured top spot on CBC Music’s Top 20 chart.

The tune, a track on the band’s first national release Speak in Rhythms, is described by lead vocalist Laura Mitic as “yearning for the arms of a loved one when you don’t feel safe. It describes how the ease of ignorance enables us to continue overusing and abusing what little we have left on this planet.”

“Nightmare” knocked Arkells’ “Relentless” out of the No. 1 spot on the adult-alternative list and is the second track from the local quintet’s 2018 album to climb to the top, following “Roots.”

Carmanah is in the midst of a national tour supporting Hey Ocean and travels through the Prairies before appearing at The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver on Dec. 8.

The Victoria group has supported such big-name acts as Ziggy Marley, Spirit of the West, Said the Whale, Wake Owl, Clinton Fearon and Current Swell. They performed for a crowd of 40,000 headlining this year’s Canada Day show at the B.C. legislature and have been on the roster of various festivals, including Rifflandia, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Tall Tree Music Festival, Otalith Music Festival, Sunshine Coast Music Festival and Kaslo Jazz Fest.
