Concerto Köln making baroque history in Victoria on Feb. 22 at Alix Goolden Hall

Concerto Köln, one of the world’s great Baroque music chamber ensembles, is making history in Victoria on Feb. 22.

Their show at Alix Goolden Hall will mark the first-ever Victoria performance on period instruments of all movements of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. This special evening is presented by The Early Music Society of the Islands.

Concerto Köln was formed in 1985 by recent graduates of various European conservatories and is noted for its self-governing organization. The musicians perform a unique repertoire of Baroque through the Classical era into the 19th century on period instruments. The ensemble also produce collaborative works, such as their mash-up of Turkish folk music with pieces by composers like Mozart. They have an extensive touring and recording history and have performed with such opera stars as soprano Cecilia Bortoli.

The Germany-based ensemble also founded the Cologne Festival of Early Music in 1992.

He also has an extensive discography, including solo violin recordings of works by Bach, Telemann, and Paginini.

Showtime is 8 p.m. Concerto Köln will also perform Baroque works by Locatelli and Valentini. For tickets and more information visit earlymusicsocietyoftheislands.ca or call 250-386-6121.
