Patrick Watson’s Wave ready to wash over Victoria audience

Former Polaris Music Prize winners from Montreal promoting new album on international tour

Montreal born-and-raised singer-songwriter Patrick Watson has a number of musical accomplishments to his credit, from writing TV and film scores to winning Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2007 and being nominated for Juno Awards along the way.

On Jan. 15 at the McPherson Playhouse, he’ll start the next stage of his international tour in support of his sixth studio album, Wave, which at one point last fall was the best-selling album in Canada.

According to Watson, the undercurrent of the album is how it feels like to have a wave knock you over, or when you realize everything you have in life can be wiped away in a moment – and then learning how not to drown in the process. The songs on Wave are personal and intimate, and Watson calls it the “most humble” of all he and his bands’ records.

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band, which includes Joe Grass (guitar), Evan Tighe (drums) and Mishka Stein (bass). The band has toured on all continents, even playing on occasion with full orchestras to bring their rich music to life.

Tickets for the Wednesday night 8 p.m. performance start at $32.50 and are available at rmts.bc.ca, by phone at 250-386-6121 or at the McPherson box office.
