Nanaimo Arts Council members are getting together to showcase their work in a new virtual venue.
From April 9 to June 9 the NAC presents its inaugural exhibition in its Sun Star online gallery. It’s one of three spaces the NAC has created to be able to hold different types of exhibitions simultaneously.
“This is our very first online gallery show and so we wanted to make it about our members,” NAC president Sean Gallagher said.
The members-only show includes paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures by around 20 members of NAC. Gallagher said the artists were given the freedom to submit work without any direction from the NAC.
“I’m not such a big theme guy,” he said. “I know a lot of other organizations do that all the time and I’d like to maybe do something different … I wanted the artists to present what they do, rather than what we want them to do.”
Gallagher said the NAC’s other two online galleries, also named after sea creatures, will soon be displaying art as well. He said a professional curated show will on display in the Moon Jelly gallery, while the Purple Urchin gallery will house the upcoming Ekphrastic Celebration, which is now seeking submissions from Nanaimo-based artists.
‘Ekphrasis’ refers to poetry describing a work of art, and in that competitive show, visual artists are asked to submit art and poets will then be asked to submit work that responds to that art. The poems will be judged, with the winner and the associated art work taking home $350 and $300, respectively. Second place gets $250 and $200, respectively, while third place wins $150 and $100, respectively.
Artists have until April 30 to submit their work and poetry submissions open next month. For more information, click here.
