Music and dance join together for special concert

The Victoria Conservatory of Music and Ballet Victoria are teaming up this weekend for a unique performance.

A special concert featuring professional dancers and musicians will be a treat for the eyes and ears this Saturday.

The Victoria Conservatory of Music is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a collaborative Jubilee Celebration concert.

“This concert is featuring the faculty from the Victoria Conservatory performing, and for the first time, they’re performing a collaboration with dancers from Ballet Victoria,” said Stephen Green, dean of Victoria Conservatory of Music.

The theme of the concert is ‘music for dance.’

“It’ll be quite unique,” said Green. “We’ll have dance music from the Renaissance, South American tango, French waltz melodies, and then some Celtic music with Celtic harps, jazz and even blues shuffle.”

All 12 professional dancers from Ballet Victoria will join the musicians onstage during the concert.

“It’s a great opportunity to have some live music for us and create some work that is different,” said Paul Destrooper, artistic director of Ballet Victoria.

Audience members will get a fresh perspective on the music, through Ballet Victoria’s choreographed moves.

“It’s a visual translation of the music,” said Destrooper. “Because of the venue, it’s very intimate. You really feel the music.”

Green said this concert is sure to be an uplifting one.

“We’re hoping that this will just lift everyone’s spirits and [they will] walk away from the concert on a really high note.”

Tickets are $35 each and are available at the door, online at vcm.bc.ca/event/dance or by phone at 250-386-5311. The concert is on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. At the Alix Goolden Performance Hall at 907 Pandora Ave.
