For those in the know, Movie Monday at the Eric Martin Pavilion Theatre has becoming something of a gathering place for movie lovers in Victoria.
At this free event, every Monday movie buff Bruce Saunders presents eclectic and thoughtful films, often with special presentations and discussions, for a committed audience.
On Dec. 3, Movie Monday presents La Bolduc, the portrait of a real life French-Canadian superstar folk singer at the beginning of the 20th century. The film explores the presence of Catholicism in Quebec society at the time, which comes at odds with Bolduc’s career as the Francophone Stompin’ Tom Connors of her era.
For anyone into nature documentaries, Movie Monday’s presentation of Jane on Dec. 10 is a must-see. This 2018 documentary looks at the career of Jane Goodall, framed by a return trip to Gombe National Park in Tanzania, where Goodall launched her career as a leading expert on chimpanzees 50 years before.
The documentary Tyrus, screening Dec. 17, looks at pioneering Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong, the man whose work inspired the classic Disney film Bambi and whose storyboards and set illustrations helped set the tone for such Hollywood classics as Rebel Without a Cause and The Wild Bunch.
A special holiday presentation will see Movie Monday magically transform into Movie Thursday for a screening of The Indian in the Cupboard on Dec. 27. This beloved family classic from director Frank Oz follows a boy whose plastic figurines begin to come to life in wonderful ways.
