It’s been more than 50 years since Jesus Christ Superstar arrived on the musical and theatrical scene and tickets for this year are expected to be in high demand.
From the time that it hit Broadway in 1971, the music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and the lyrics of Tom Rice have captivated audiences worldwide. Now Broadway in Victoria is bringing the show back for Victoria audiences.
The show will run at the McPherson Theatre from Jan. 2-7, 2024, coming from London, UK (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre & the West End) — where it won the OLIVIER Award for BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL.
The production is now on its North American tour, having played to critical acclaim in more than 50 cities including a sold-out run at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre in 2022.
Jack Hopewell stars as Jesus, joined by Elvie Ellis as Judas and Jaden Dominique as Mary in this re-imagined version of the production. The tour also welcomes Grant Hodges as Caiaphas, Alex Stone as Pilate, and Mekhi Holloway as Annas.
The musical is coming to life under the direction of acclaimed director Timothy Sheader and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie, with other notable names on the creative team such as 2016 Tony Award nominee Tom Scutt who is doing costume design.
With almost too many stage adaptions to count, the recorded soundtrack and the movie (which grossed the 2023 equivalent of about $162 million) Jesus Christ Superstar has become an indelible part of our musical culture.
The story is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks of the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Gethsemane’ and ‘Superstar’.
