Canada Day is one of those days that lends itself well to relaxation, spending time with the family and enjoying an interesting meal, snack or beverage.
At the Gorge Canada Day Picnic, the hugely popular event staged annually along the scenic waterway on July 1 by the Gorge-Tillicum Community Association, you can experience a little of all of those things.
But it all starts with a pancake breakfast.
The hotcakes hit the griddle starting at 8:30 a.m. at Craigflower-Kosapsom Park, on the Admirals end of Gorge Road, and they don’t stop coming until 11 a.m. You can pick up a plate of pancakes for $3 and a cup of Starbucks coffee for $1. Organizers do their best to serve everyone who lines up by 11, but remember, other food trucks are on site by that time as well.

In all, there’s 28 different street food vendors signed up for the day’s festivities, from ethnic food offerings to a multitude of snack and dessert choices. Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can find everything from gourmet pizza, fish & chips, and smokies & hot dogs to Mexican and Greek food, fresh squeezed lemonade, mini-doughnuts, langos, ice cream and shaved ice, baked goods and more.
After you’ve strolled through the market vendor area, checked out the classic car show and shine, admired the art exhibits, listened to some local musicians and maybe taken part in a street hockey game, you might want to visit the Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club at the Tillicum Road end of the Gorge. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., the club will be serving up fresh strawberries on cake, with tea, coffee or lemonade for $5 per person.
