Voting Begins for Pop-Up @ the Square People’s Choice Award

Creative ideas for a pop-up play feature in Centennial Square this summer have been plentiful.  A total of 33 submissions, ranging from design concepts from a local high school to as far afield as Indonesia, Mexico and Poland, were submitted to the competition this spring.

People’s Choice voting opens today and runs through until April 30.  Come into the Douglas Street foyer of City Hall to view the design ideas and cast your own vote or visit victoria.ca/popupsquare to vote online.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive $1,000. The overall winning design will be selected by a jury panel, and will receive a $5,000 award and up to $50,000 to design, build and install an imaginative play feature for a wide range of ages in Victoria’s signature public square. Winners are to be announced May 2 and installation of the temporary pop-up play feature will take place in early July.

Recognizing that there are currently limited play opportunities for families with children living in the downtown core, the City partnered with the Downtown Victoria Business Association to seek innovative and creative solutions to integrate play into the everyday fabric of the downtown public realm.
