Alonzo King LINES Ballet; heart in the music, heart in the dance
Get ready to be seduced this weekend by the inspired movers of Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet.
The last time we were treated to their artistry we were truly wooed by their luscious lines and rousing interpretation…truly not to be missed.
Be prepared for a unique double bill where the company continues to draw inspiration both musically – first in Sand pairing jazz greats Jason Moran & Charles Lloyd & second using four string quartets for Shostakovich – and as a collective of co-creators. As former Ballet Victoria dancer Robb Beresford, now with Alonzo King explains, “in our work, we get to think of ourselves as more than the choreographer’s medium and ask: what is it that I want to say?”
As outlined on their website, Sand, plays with the “exacting discipline” of both jazz and ballet to stretch both the bodies of these exquisite artists and their audience.
Shostakovich is set to 4 string quartets by the composer and is billed as offering music “that wavers in a state of crystalline suspension, pushing the dancers’ tensile strength to the limit as they revel in the space between harmony and discord, in the long arc before an earthbound fall.”
Although at times this artsy-dance-company talk can make one nervous I have no doubt this performance will deliver. In the words of Jennifer Homans of The New Republic, “"To know who Alonzo King is and what he is doing, you have to see his extraordinary dancers: beautifully trained, sensitive, intelligent, and physically elegant in ways that are rare in today's more acrobatic and athletically inclined dance world...
