Emily Carr String Quartet set for summer concert in Sooke

Sooke Harbour House concert on July 29

The Emily Carr String Quartet will perform a summer concert at the Sooke Harbour House Resort Hotel.

This year’s concert includes Beethoven’s string quartet Op. 18 no. 5 in A major, Variations on I Got Rhythm by George Gershwin ( arr. Naughtin) and Dvorak’s quartet in F major op. 96 (American).

The Emily Carr String Quartet, which includes Müge Büyükçelen-Badel (violin), Cory Balzer (violin), Mieka Michaux (viola), and Alasdair Money (cello) – has established itself as one of B.C.’s finest music ensembles.

Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony and the Aventa Ensemble of Victoria, the Emily Carr String Quartet has performed in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

It has participated in residencies at Stanford University and the Banff Centre and has collaborated with artists such as William Preucil, Jamie Parker, Arthur Rowe, the Alcan Quartet, the Tin Alley Quartet and the Lafayette string quartet.

The quartet has performed for Music in the Morning and Music on Main concert series in Vancouver, the Ankara Music Festival, Hornby Festival, Victoria Summer Music Festival and the IAMA Canadian Music Showcase in Montreal.

In 2012, the ECSQ was was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

The quartet has also done much to honour the celebrated local artist, Emily Carr. It perform works that pay homage to her, such as Jean Coulthard’s Pines of Emily Carr, and has incorporated her writings into some concerts, most notably in a summer series held at Emily Carr House in 2006, 2012 and 2014.

In 2011, as part of the Victoria Symphony’s Emily Carr Project, the quartet participated in the première of Stories from Klee Wyck by local composer Tobin Stokes.

The concert is on July 29 at the Sooke Harbour House Resort Hotel outdoor pavilion, beginning at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the performance are $20 and can be bought online at eventbrite.ca.
