Diana Lynn and Debra Doerksen are spiritual mediums and will be coming to Sidney’s Mary Winspear Centre for their show Beyond The Veil on June 25.

What if you could communicate with your loved one’s who have passed away? That’s the aim for spiritual mediums Diana Lynn and Debra Doerksen, who have been seeing what they refer to as ‘Spirit’ for quite a while.

“For me, I’ve been seeing spirits since I was about three. That’s sort of the earlier memory that I have,” said Lynn.

In their physical form, Lynn recalled seeing her relatives standing at the end of her bedside, and grew up thinking that was a normal thing.

“And then as I got to be in my teenage years realized that it wasn’t a normal thing, so I tried to shut it down,” she said.

In her 20s following high school, Lynn got a job as a nurse’s aid, working the night shift and she began having visions of people walking down the hall.

“So I reached out to a psychic saying ‘what do I do?’”

She said the psychic said “Spirit,” which refers to an individual’s loved one, is drawn to her light. She said sometimes it’s not all about having them go towards the light or moving, but to be acknowledged and so that’s what Lynn did.

“Unlike Diana I didn’t see Spirit when I was a child and I didn’t believe in any of this psychic medium stuff until I was 38,” said Doerksen.

It all began when she was working at The Lodge at Broadmead in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia unit. She was on a night shift at 2 a.m. and saw a little brown dog who walked up beside her and heard someone calling ‘Sandy, Sandy!’

“As it turned out one of the women that I was working with had a little chocolate collie named Sandy when she was a child and it kind of twisted my mind a bit…” said Doerksen.

She said Spirit gives you a sort of prompting.

“You’re receiving information in a multitude of ways. You’re seeing it, you’re hearing it, you’re feeling it, but sometimes when Spirit wants you to say something they kind of give you a little push, a little nudge.”

She then had other situations similar to that and went from non-believer to believer and said she spent the first two years crying as she was so overwhelmed by love.

“When you experience love from spirit realm or you connect to spirit and you feel the love that they’re imparting, it is a flood (of emotion) like nothing else I’ve ever felt.”

The first thing the women will do is verify the information. When they see Spirit, they need to present the proof first and get validation from the individuals in front of them for the connection to be made clear.

“So in a session we’ll sit down and Spirit will make themselves present and I will either hear them, see them or they’ll place images in my mind,” said Lynn.

She said she will usually try to remove all of her thoughts and emotions so Spirit can impress the thoughs of another person on her.

“It’s always about the evidence first and then secondly it’s about giving the message to the person,” she said, adding that the message is an important piece but you can’t have the message without the validation.
