Rifflandia night one reviews: Class Actress and Data Romance

Data Romance

Alix Goolden Hall

Sept. 13, 9:30pm

The sound created from Ajay Bhattacharyya and Amy Kirkpatric, the duo that make up Vancouver electronic band Data Romance, came as a huge surprise. Watching the stage being set I was expecting something low key due to the minimal amount of equipment (a keyboard, a couple of electronic drum pads and one cymbal) and simple all black stage attire. However, this talented duo was able to pull off a performance that sounded as rich and as full as any orchestra.

It is clear the level of effort Ajay Bhattacharyya and Amy Kirkpatrick put into having a well rehearsed clean performance, not a single note seemed out of place. Not bad for their Victoria debut.

Class Actress

Alix Goolden Hall

Sept. 13, 10:30pm

Brooklyn based band, Class Actress, is just dripping with genuine ‘80s synth pop dance music nostalgia and lead singer, Elizabeth Harper, had the outfit it to match, taking the stage in a trench-coat reminiscent of John Bender from The Breakfast Club and eventually transitioning to a nicely shoulder padded blazer. The overall experience was like stepping into a time machine.

The downside to this performance was the venue, The Alix Goolden hall is fantastic sound wise, but a seated venue is not conducive to the fact that Class Actress is music you were meant to dance to. However a few audience members took to getting their groove on in the aisles and pews.
