Fringe Preview: The Cockwhisperer — A Love Story
Tag along on one woman’s journey to find the perfect penis in The Cockwhisperer — A Love Story.
Comedic writer and actress Colette Kendall of Hamilton, Ont., stars in this trilogy of semi-autobiographical stories about lust and love.
“I want people to walk away with what they get out of it,” says Kendall. “Definitely, there’s some embellishment, but the main issues are all things I’ve dealt with in my life.”
The former stay-at-home mother of three with a bio-chemistry degree started doing standup at the behest of her boyfriend just before her 40th birthday. She’s since been nominated for three Canadian Comedy Awards for best solo show, including one for The Cockwhisperer.
“It felt like I was three-years-old playing in a sandbox again. I loved it,” says Kendall.
She began taking improv classes at the Staircase Theatre (she’s now executive director) and did her first Fringe tour when her children were 10, 8 and 6-years-old. Now, the oldest is 18 and has even attended a performance.
“It’s been interesting,” says Kendall. “We’re pretty liberal with all subject matter in my household and have always been open with the way we speak and the words we use ... I do talk about my first husband, which happens to be my children’s father. It’s not meant to be a play where there’s judgment cast. I explain a grey situation and I don’t come out looking great and he doesn’t come out looking great. But that’s life — it’s grey.”
While the play covers awkward topics like losing virginity, spousal abuse and impotence, it’s still a comedy and Kendall’s track record proves this show should be full of zingers.
